What is a RAW File?

A RAW file is essentially the unprocessed data captured by your camera's image sensor. When you press the shutter, the sensor records light data. In RAW mode, that data is saved with minimal in-camera processing — no sharpening, no contrast enhancement, no colour correction. What you get is the full, rich dataset from the sensor.

Because each camera manufacturer implements RAW differently, there is no single "RAW" format. Canon uses .CR2 and .CR3, Nikon uses .NEF, Sony uses .ARW, Adobe's universal DNG format is also widely used. All of these are proprietary or semi-proprietary, which means you need software capable of reading them — such as Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or the free RawTherapee.

RAW files typically contain 12–14 bits of colour data per channel, compared to JPEG's 8 bits. This translates to far more tonal gradations and significantly more latitude for correcting exposure, white balance, and highlights or shadows in post-processing.

What is a JPEG File?

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a compressed image format that has been the standard for digital photography since the 1990s. When you shoot JPEG, the camera processes the RAW sensor data internally — applying noise reduction, sharpening, colour rendering, and white balance adjustments based on your camera's profile settings — and then compresses the result using lossy compression before saving.

The result is a much smaller file that looks great straight out of camera, is universally compatible with every device and software application, and requires no post-processing to share or use. The trade-off is that once the camera has discarded the data it deemed unnecessary during compression, that information is gone permanently.

When to Shoot RAW

RAW is the right choice when:

  • You need maximum editing control. Portrait, landscape, and commercial photographers who spend time in post-processing will get far better results starting from RAW. You can pull back blown highlights by 2–3 stops, recover underexposed shadows dramatically, and change white balance entirely without quality loss.
  • Lighting is challenging. High-contrast scenes — golden hour, backlit subjects, indoor mixed lighting — push the boundaries of exposure. RAW gives you the data to work with in these situations; JPEG often clips highlights or crushes shadows irreversibly.
  • The shot must be perfect. For weddings, portraits, commercial work, or any situation where you have one chance to capture an important moment, RAW gives you insurance. A slightly off exposure or wrong white balance can be fixed without visible quality loss.
  • You are printing large. For prints larger than A4, the extra tonal range in RAW files produces noticeably better results, particularly in gradients like skies.

When to Shoot JPEG

JPEG is a perfectly valid choice when:

  • Speed matters. Sports and news photographers often prefer JPEG because cameras can write JPEGs to the card faster, extending burst depth. Images can be transferred and published immediately.
  • Storage is limited. On a long trip with limited card capacity, JPEGs let you shoot far more images.
  • You nail exposure in-camera. Experienced photographers who understand light and use their camera's histogram will often produce JPEGs that need little or no editing. If your in-camera colour profiles are set up to your taste, JPEG can be essentially final.
  • You do not want to edit. Not everyone wants to spend hours in Lightroom. JPEG gives you finished, shareable images immediately — which is genuinely better for many photographers.
  • You are a beginner. Learning exposure, composition, and the fundamentals of photography is easier when you are not also dealing with RAW processing workflows.

The RAW + JPEG Option

Most modern cameras let you shoot RAW + JPEG simultaneously, saving both files for every shot. This gives you the best of both worlds: a JPEG that is immediately ready to share, and a RAW file to work with if you need full editing flexibility.

The downside is obvious — you use roughly twice the storage space. It also slows your camera down slightly during burst shooting. For most photographers, this is a worthwhile trade-off for important sessions, even if you shoot JPEG-only for casual use.

Storage Tip: If you shoot RAW regularly, invest in a NAS drive or cloud backup solution. RAW files from a 45-megapixel camera can be 80–100 MB each. A single day's professional shoot can easily consume 50–100 GB of storage.

HEIC: The Modern Alternative on Smartphones

Modern iPhones shoot in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) format by default. HEIC achieves roughly half the file size of JPEG at equivalent visual quality by using more advanced compression (HEVC video codec). It also supports 10-bit colour depth compared to JPEG's 8-bit.

However, HEIC is not universally supported. Many web platforms, email clients, and older software cannot display HEIC files without conversion. Post-Processing Workflow Tips

If you shoot RAW, your workflow will typically look like this:

  1. Import RAW files into editing software (Lightroom, Capture One, etc.).
  2. Apply lens correction and any global adjustments (exposure, white balance, contrast).
  3. Make local adjustments using masks or brushes if needed.
  4. Export to JPEG or WebP for web delivery, or TIFF for print.
