The Short Answer

Anrok charges $100 per market per month for software and AI companies, $50 on the ecommerce plan, filing and remittance included, no free tier. Numeral charges $75 per filing plus $150 per registration on top of a genuinely free monitoring tier, month-to-month, no setup fees for standard US filings. Quaderno charges $29 to $149 a month by transaction volume — a fully published ladder, and the only one of the three where the price is blind to how many jurisdictions you are in. All three figures verified on the vendors' own pricing pages on 23 August 2026.

Three things decide between them, in this order. One: is filing in scope? Anrok and Numeral both file and remit at the prices above; Quaderno's published tiers buy calculation, thresholds, invoicing and reports, with managed filing quoted separately in a consultation. Two: how often do your states make you file? Per-market pricing does not care and per-filing pricing cares enormously, and the gap between quarterly and monthly filing is 3× on one bill and 0% on the other. Three: where is the ceiling? Each model converts to "contact sales" at a different point — Anrok at roughly ten markets, Numeral at the US border, Quaderno at 2,500 transactions a month.

Three Units, One Bill

The reason no comparison page puts these three in a single table is that a table needs a shared column, and there isn't one. Here is what each vendor actually meters.

Read the "indifferent to" row as the buying signal. Each vendor has chosen to ignore the variable its own customers vary least on and to meter the one they vary most on. If your business is unusual on the axis a vendor meters — twenty registrations on tiny revenue, or enormous volume in two states — you are the customer that pricing model was not built for, and it shows up as a bill two or three times what the marketing implies.

The Scope Gap Behind the Cheapest Price

Quaderno at $29 a month sitting next to Anrok at $100 per market per month is the comparison this SERP keeps making, and it is not like-for-like.

Anrok's Starter price explicitly includes registration, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificate management and physical nexus tracking. Numeral's whole billing unit is a filing. Quaderno's published ladder covers threshold tracking with registration alerts, automatic rate application across 12,000+ jurisdictions, localized invoicing, tax-compliant checkout and jurisdiction-ready reports — and Quaderno does offer to file on your behalf, but that service is presented on its filing page behind a "book a free consultation" call to action, with no price anywhere in the published tier ladder (checked 23 August 2026).

So the honest reading of the $29 tier is that it is the cheapest way to get the numbers right, not the cheapest way to get the returns filed. That may be exactly what you want — plenty of small digital sellers have an accountant who will file from a clean report for less than a compliance platform charges — but it means the figure to compare against Anrok's is Quaderno's subscription plus a filing quote plus whatever your accountant bills, and only one of those three numbers is on a public web page.

Two smaller scope notes before you read any row as final. Quaderno's entry Hobby tier is capped at 1 user, 1 jurisdiction and 1 integration, which makes it a single-market plan by design — cross a second threshold and you are on $49 minimum. And Numeral's non-US coverage (70+ countries), tax engine API access and tax lawyer consultations all sit on Enterprise, so a company with EU VAT obligations cannot use the published $75 figure at all.

Filing Frequency Is the Break-Even

US states assign filing frequency by volume — commonly monthly for larger sellers, quarterly in the middle, annually for small ones — and they reassign it as you grow. This is the variable that decides between per-market and per-filing pricing, and none of the vendor comparisons mention it.

The conversion is one division. Anrok's software Starter plan costs $1,200 per market per year. At Numeral's $75 per filing, that buys 16 filings. A state cannot ask for more than 12 filings a year, so on filing cost alone the per-filing model stays cheaper than the software rate at every cadence a US state can assign. Against Anrok's $50 ecommerce rate — $600 per market per year — the break-even is 8 filings, which lands between quarterly (4) and monthly (12) and flips the answer depending on which cadence your states assigned you.

Filing cadenceFilings per state per yearNumeral cost per statevs Anrok software ($1,200)vs Anrok ecommerce ($600)
Annual1$75Numeral 16× cheaperNumeral 8× cheaper
Quarterly4$300Numeral 4× cheaperNumeral 2× cheaper
Monthly12$900Numeral 25% cheaperAnrok 33% cheaper

Add $150 per registration to Numeral's first-year column and the picture shifts a little but not much: a quarterly-filing state costs $450 in year one and $300 every year after. The registration fee is a one-off; the frequency multiplier is forever.

The second-order effect matters more than the table. Growing inside a state moves you up a filing cadence, and that is a price rise Anrok's customers never experience. A state that reassigns you from quarterly to monthly triples that line item overnight — $300 to $900 — with no change in the service you receive. If you are already close to monthly filing in most of your states, per-market pricing is quietly selling you insurance against your own growth, and that is the strongest case for Anrok that Anrok does not make.

Running your own version takes one division and one multiplication: our VAT calculator and percentage calculator handle the rate side, and the break-even calculator handles the crossover.

Three Company Shapes, Priced

Same three vendors, three realistic profiles, using only published figures. Where a profile falls outside a published tier that is stated rather than estimated.

Shape 1 — Seed-stage B2B SaaS: 5 US states, all quarterly filers, ~400 invoices a month

VendorArithmeticYear oneSteady state
Anrok Starter (software)5 markets × $100 × 12$6,000$6,000
Numeral Professional5 × 4 filings × $75, plus 5 × $150 registration$2,250$1,500
Quaderno Business$99 × 12 (400 tx/mo fits the 1,000 tier)$1,188 + filing quote$1,188 + filing quote

At this shape the per-filing model wins clearly — four times cheaper than per-market — and the free Monitoring tier means you can confirm the five states are the right five before paying anyone anything. Quaderno's software line is cheaper still, but the missing filing quote is doing a lot of work in that row: if it comes back above roughly $26 a month, Numeral is cheaper all-in.

Shape 2 — The same company two years on: still 5 states, now all monthly filers, ~2,400 invoices a month

VendorArithmeticAnnualChange vs Shape 1
Anrok Starter (software)5 × $100 × 12 — unchanged$6,0000%
Numeral Professional5 × 12 filings × $75$4,500+200%
Quaderno Growth$149 × 12 (2,400 tx/mo fits the 2,500 tier)$1,788 + filing quote+51%

Nothing about the service changed. The states changed their minds about how often they want to hear from you, and one bill tripled while another did not move at all. Numeral is still cheaper here — the 16-filing break-even holds — but the trajectory has reversed, and a company adding states as well as frequency crosses over.

Shape 3 — Cross-border digital seller: 3 US states, EU OSS, UK, Canada, Australia; ~900 transactions a month

VendorArithmeticAnnual
Anrok Starter (software)7 markets × $100 × 12$8,400 (Custom territory nears at ~10 markets)
NumeralNon-US coverage sits on EnterpriseNot computable — quote only
Quaderno Business$99 × 12; jurisdictions unlimited above Hobby$1,188 + filing quote

This is the shape where the published prices stop converging and the model choice becomes obvious. Jurisdiction-blind pricing is worth the most to the company with the most jurisdictions — which is exactly the company per-market pricing charges the most. Note what also happened to the comparison itself: the moment the business crossed a border, one of the three vendors stopped having a price.

Where Each Model Stops Being Priced

All three convert to a custom quote eventually. The useful question is not whether — it is whether the conversion point sits in front of you or behind you.

VendorPublished pricing stops when…What trips it in practice
AnrokCustom is positioned for teams scaling from 10+ markets; extra fees can apply to high-volume Starter sellersJurisdiction expansion, or unusually heavy transaction volume on Starter
NumeralAnything outside standard US sales tax — global coverage, tax engine API, lawyer consultations — is EnterpriseYour first EU, UK or GST registration
QuadernoAbove 2,500 transactions a month; and managed filing is unpriced at every tierGrowth in order volume, or wanting someone else to file

Quaderno's ceiling has a counting trap in it. A transaction is defined as any sale, refund or purchase recorded in the app. A store running 2,300 orders a month with a 4% refund rate (92 refunds) and 150 recorded supplier purchases is at 2,542 recorded events — past the 2,500 cap and into a quote, on 2,300 orders. Budget against order count and you will be wrong by the size of your returns rate, which is precisely the number that rises in a bad quarter.

Numeral's ceiling is the one most likely to be crossed by accident, because crossing a VAT threshold abroad is something that happens to you rather than something you decide. That is also the strongest argument for using its free tier regardless of who you eventually buy from: Monitoring covers a nexus study, ongoing economic and physical nexus monitoring, alerts and historical exposure audits at no cost, so "where do we now owe" is answerable without a purchase.

Why the Anrok Numbers Online Are Wrong

If you have already researched this category you have probably seen Anrok described in tiers called Core, Pro and Enterprise at $400, $500 and $1,000 a month, with a percentage-of-transactions component and a $300-a-month physical nexus monitoring add-on. The most price-focused non-vendor page on this SERP carries exactly those figures, stamped "Verified April 21, 2026."

Anrok's own pricing page on 23 August 2026 shows no such structure. There are two tiers — Starter and Custom — Starter is priced per market per month at $100 or $50, and physical nexus tracking is listed inside the Starter bundle rather than as a $300 add-on. We checked the vendor page directly rather than taking a third party's word for it, which is the only reason the gap is visible.

The practical consequence is larger than one stale table. A five-market seller reading the old figures budgets $4,800 a year for "Core" plus $3,600 for nexus monitoring, concludes Anrok is unaffordable, and never reaches the $6,000 all-in number that would have been competitive. In a category where nearly every comparison is published by a competitor, a price that has moved in the buyer's favour is the last thing anyone rushes to update. Check the vendor's own page, and put a date on the claim — ours are dated on every line of the Anrok, Numeral and Quaderno profiles.

The Decision

If this describes youPickBecause

High order volume concentrated in two or three statesAnrok or NumeralTransaction-metered pricing punishes this profile specifically; Quaderno's ceiling arrives first
Refunds are a large share of your order flowNot Quaderno's entry tiersRefunds draw down the same allowance as sales, so gross events set your tier, not net orders

Two questions to put to whichever one you shortlist, neither of which a sales process volunteers. What happens to my bill when a state moves me to monthly filing? The answer is "nothing" at Anrok, "it triples for that state" at Numeral, and "nothing, but you or your accountant do three times the work" on Quaderno's published plan. And what is the quoted price for managed filing? — a question only Quaderno needs to answer, and the one that decides whether its headline price is the bargain it looks like.

One clause is worth adding whichever way it goes, and it has nothing to do with price: an on-demand export of your registration records, filing history and exemption certificates. Tax records outlive vendors, and this category consolidates — Quaderno itself was acquired by Visma in 2023 after ten bootstrapped years. The reasoning is the same as in our piece on SaaS vendor shutdown risk: an export right triggered by termination is worth far less than one you can exercise on an ordinary Tuesday.

FAQ

How much does Anrok cost?

$100 per market per month for software and AI companies, $50 per market per month on the ecommerce plan — verified on anrok.com/pricing, 23 August 2026. Both Starter prices include Atlas AI, exposure monitoring, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates and physical nexus tracking. Additional fees can apply to high-volume Starter sellers. Custom is quote-only and positioned for teams scaling past roughly ten markets. There is no free tier.

How much does Numeral cost?

Monitoring is free — nexus study, automatic monitoring, alerts and exposure audits. Professional is $75 per filing and $150 per registration, with autofile, remittance, virtual mailbox, product classification and exemption certificates included; the first 50 certificates are free, there are no setup or onboarding fees for standard US filings, and accounts run month-to-month with no required contract. Enterprise covers 70+ countries and adds tax engine API access and tax lawyer consultations, quote-only.

Is Quaderno really only $29 a month?

The tier is real and fully published — $29 for 25 transactions, then $49, $99 and $149 for 250, 1,000 and 2,500 — but $29 buys one user, one jurisdiction and one integration, and none of the published tiers states a price for managed filing. Compare it against Anrok or Numeral only after you have a filing quote, or after deciding to file yourself.

Which pricing model is cheapest?

Per-filing, at most US-only shapes: $1,200 a year per market at Anrok's software rate is the equivalent of 16 filings at $75 each, and no US state asks for more than 12. Against Anrok's $50 ecommerce rate the break-even is 8 filings, so monthly filers do better on Anrok and quarterly filers on Numeral. Once you are in many jurisdictions, transaction-metered pricing wins on the software line because it ignores jurisdiction count entirely.

What counts as a transaction in Quaderno?

Any sale, refund or purchase recorded in the app. Refunds and recorded supplier purchases draw down the same allowance as sales, so 2,300 orders with a 4% refund rate and 150 recorded purchases is roughly 2,542 events — past the 2,500 ceiling. Budget on recorded events, not orders.

Can I find out where I owe tax without buying anything?

Yes. Numeral's Monitoring tier is free and covers the nexus study, ongoing economic and physical nexus monitoring, threshold alerts and historical exposure audits. It is the only free entry point among the three, and there is no obligation to buy filings from the same vendor afterwards.

Do any of these three replace an accountant?

Anrok and Numeral both file and remit at the prices quoted, which removes the mechanical work in the jurisdictions they cover. Neither removes the judgement calls — product taxability, entity structure, historical exposure — and Numeral sells tax lawyer consultations as an Enterprise line precisely because the software layer does not cover them. Quaderno on its published tiers is explicitly the tooling under an accountant rather than a replacement for one.

One option deliberately outside this three-way: Stripe Tax, whose Complete plan does register and file but meters filings by annual allowance rather than charging per return. That structure breaks in a specific and predictable place — we ran the arithmetic in what 4 filings a year actually buys.
