How to Calculate VAT

  1. Enter the amount — either the net price (before VAT) or the gross price (including VAT).
  2. Enter the VAT rate — your country's standard rate (e.g., 20% in the UK, 21% in the Netherlands, 19% in Germany).
  3. Click Calculate — the tool shows the VAT amount, the price including VAT, and the net price excluding VAT.
  4. Use for invoices — copy the figures directly into your invoices, quotes, or accounting software.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAT (Value Added Tax)? ▼
VAT is a consumption tax applied at each stage of the supply chain where value is added. Unlike sales tax (applied only at the final sale), VAT is collected incrementally. Businesses charge VAT on sales and reclaim VAT on purchases, so only the end consumer bears the full cost. Over 170 countries use VAT.
How do I add VAT to a price? ▼
Multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate). For a £100 product with 20% VAT: £100 × 1.20 = £120 including VAT. The VAT amount is £20.
How do I remove VAT from a price? ▼
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by (1 + VAT rate). For a £120 price including 20% VAT: £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net price. The VAT portion is £20. Do not simply subtract 20% from £120 (that gives £96, which is incorrect).
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax? ▼
VAT is collected at every stage of production and distribution, with businesses reclaiming input VAT. Sales tax is collected only once, at the point of sale to the final consumer. VAT is self-policing (each business has an incentive to report), making it harder to evade.
What are the standard VAT rates in Europe? ▼
Common standard rates: UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Netherlands 21%, Spain 21%, Italy 22%, Sweden 25%, and Denmark 25%. Most countries also have reduced rates (5–12%) for essentials like food, books, and medicine.
