Fonoa
API-first global tax determination for platform businesses, now bolted to the enterprise returns system it bought from PwC.
About Fonoa
Fonoa spent its first six years as an API-first tax engine for platform businesses and became something else in May 2026, when it raised a $110M Series C led by Headline and simultaneously bought Indirect Tax Edge from PwC — the compliance reporting system global enterprises already used for VAT and GST reporting, e-filing, transactional data management and tax analytics, with PwC continuing to deliver services through it. That combination is the reason to look at Fonoa now: real-time determination across 190+ jurisdictions at sub-200ms, tax ID validation in 100+ countries, e-invoicing, and an enterprise returns stack that did not have to grow organically out of the API. The product is modular — Tax Engine, Validate, E-Invoicing, Returns, Knowledge, Audit, with an Agents module flagged as coming — and it all runs off one data model behind a versioned API that slots into checkout, billing, invoicing and AP/AR. That is both the appeal and the constraint: this is a build, not a no-code setup, and it suits companies with engineers to point at it. Customers skew to marketplaces and platforms with genuinely global footprints — Uber, Netflix, Canva, Booking.com, Remote. Note that Fonoa's own numbers do not agree with each other: the funding announcement claims over a billion transactions processed annually while the about page says 500 million, so treat either as a directional scale signal rather than a measurement. Pricing is quote-only; there is no rate card, no self-serve signup and no pricing page at all. Founded in Dublin in 2019 by three Uber alumni.

- Notes
- No public rate card and no self-serve signup. Verified 2026-08-26: fonoa.com/pricing returns HTTP 404 — the site has no pricing page, and every product page routes to a demo booking instead. Pricing is negotiated per deal. Because the platform is modular (Tax Engine, Validate, E-Invoicing, Returns, Knowledge, Audit), scope and therefore cost depend on which modules are licensed rather than on seat count; the acquisition of PwC's Indirect Tax Edge adds an enterprise returns line that did not previously exist in the catalogue. Integration requires engineering resource, which is a real cost beyond the subscription: this is an API build, not a connector setup. No free tier or trial is offered. Buyers should scope module-by-module and expect enterprise procurement timelines.
