Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount? ▼
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100, then subtract from the original. For example, 30% off a $80 item: $80 × 0.30 = $24 discount, so you pay $80 − $24 = $56.
Can I stack multiple discounts? ▼
Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not added. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off — it is 20% off first, then 10% off the reduced price. On a $100 item: $100 → $80 → $72, which is 28% total, not 30%.
What is the difference between discount and markup? ▼
A discount reduces the selling price for the buyer. A markup increases the cost price for the seller. They are inverse operations: a 25% markup on a $40 cost produces a $50 selling price, while a 25% discount on $50 brings it back to $37.50 (not $40), because the percentages are calculated on different bases.
How do I find the original price before a discount? ▼
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount rate). For example, if an item costs $60 after a 25% discount: $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 original price.
Should I calculate tax before or after discount? ▼
In most jurisdictions, sales tax is applied after the discount. You pay tax on the discounted price, not the original. A $100 item at 20% off with 8% tax: ($100 − $20) × 1.08 = $86.40.
Is my data stored anywhere? ▼
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server.
