Melio

Small-business bill pay with a genuinely free tier and published per-transaction fees, now owned by Xero after the $2.5B acquisition completed in October 2025.

About Melio

Two facts about Melio matter before any feature comparison, and most of the listicles ranking for this category state neither. The first is ownership: Xero completed its acquisition of Melio on 15 October 2025 for US$2.5 billion, so this is no longer an independent vendor, and buyers weighing a multi-year commitment should factor in that its roadmap now runs through an accounting platform that competes with QuickBooks. The second is that Melio's pricing changed shape — it is no longer the free-unlimited-ACH tool it was known as. There is still a free forever plan, Go, but it caps free ACH at five payments a month; Core at $25, Boost at $55 and Unlimited at $80 monthly raise that to 20, 50 and unlimited, and additional ACH beyond the allowance costs $0.50 each. Checks are $1.50, wires $10, and card payments carry the familiar 2.9%. That card line is the actual reason many small businesses use it: you can pay a supplier who only accepts a bank transfer or a paper check by putting the bill on a credit card, keeping the float and the card points while the vendor is paid how they wanted. Add two-way sync with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero and NetSuite, invoicing on the AR side, and pay-over-time financing across up to twelve installments, and the fit is clear: a small business or the accounting firm running its books, not a controller with an SAP instance.

Notes
Drafted 2026-08-28 from the vendor pricing page (meliopayments.com now 301-redirects to melio.com). Five tiers: Go at '$0 /free forever' with 5 free ACH per month; Core at $25/mo monthly or $20/mo annual with 20 free ACH; Boost at $55/mo monthly or $44/mo annual with 50 free ACH; Unlimited at $80/mo monthly or $64/mo annual with unlimited free ACH and unlimited users; Platinum at custom pricing. Transaction fees published on the same page: ACH $0.50 (beyond the plan allowance), check $1.50, fast check $20, wire $10, card 2.9%, international ACH in USD a $20 flat fee, international card in USD 2.9% + $20; fast/overnight delivery adds further fees. Seats are limited on Go and Core, with extra users at $10/mo (or $8/mo per additional user on annual Core). The important comparison note: the free tier is real but the ACH allowance, not the monthly fee, is what determines cost — a business paying 60 bills a month is on Boost or paying per transaction regardless of which tier it picked. VERIFICATION PASS 2026-08-28: tier prices and ACH allowances re-checked against independent pricing trackers and agree with the vendor page on all four published tiers ($0/$25/$55/$80 monthly, $20/$44/$64 annual; 5/20/50/unlimited free ACH) and on the flat 2.9% card fee across tiers. One extra fee those trackers surface that the vendor pricing page did not: instant transfer charged at 1% capped at $75. Recorded as third-party-reported and not confirmed on the vendor page.
