Every invoice carries its own thread, so the question a controller asks about a line item, the department head's answer, and the vendor's reply all sit against the document rather than scattered across an email chain nobody can find at audit time. External contacts can be pulled into a single invoice with limited access — they see the image and a box to answer the specific question — which is the practical difference between a comment feature and an actual approval workflow. The AI layer is branded Billy, described by the vendor as an AI employee rather than a chatbot: it captures invoice data by OCR, auto-populates coding fields including custom ones, learns to suggest approvers, flags duplicates and fraud signals, and handles two- and three-way PO matching including blanket POs, freight and tax. The second differentiator is integration breadth. Stampli claims support for more than 70 ERPs, and the named list runs well past QuickBooks into Sage Intacct, Acumatica, Oracle NetSuite, Oracle Fusion, four Microsoft Dynamics variants, SAP ECC and S/4HANA — which is why it shows up in mid-market and construction finance stacks that lighter bill-pay tools cannot serve.
